Diaz Music Institute (DMI) is committed to the education, preservation, and performance of Latin music traditions. DMI provides high-quality music education, mentorship, and performance opportunities for children of all backgrounds and income levels, particularly students with limited access to high-quality arts education opportunities. Through its programs, DMI helps students build confidence, develop musical skills, and explore future educational and professional pathways in the music industry.
History
Established in 2000 by founder Jose Antonio Diaz, Diaz Music Institute (DMI) provides rigorous and rewarding music education opportunities of the highest quality. Recognized as one of Houston’s leading Latin music education organizations, DMI’s innovative programming, developed by Artistic Director Jose Antonio Diaz, has garnered national and international recognition. DMI actively partners with schools and community organizations in underserved Houston neighborhoods. To support its mission, DMI has implemented the following programs:
- Established the award-winning youth ensemble “Caliente.”
- Developed a year-round after-school music program that provides students with limited access to arts education and the opportunity to develop their musical talents
- Hosts a yearly conservatory-style summer music program for students with limited access to high-quality arts education opportunities
- Developed outreach programs supporting students through music education, mentorship, leadership development, and career exploration opportunities
- Presents concerts, workshops, and educational events throughout underserved Houston communities

How We Help Kids
Students who participate in Diaz Music Institute programs develop skills that help prepare them for success in academics, careers, and life. These include teamwork, self-confidence, leadership, self-discipline, time management, marketing, problem-solving, relationship-building, entrepreneurship, creativity, and improvisation.
