.For more than 26 years, Diaz Music Institute has provided engaging and transformative music education experiences for students throughout Houston. Our Summer Music Workshops combine jazz, Latin jazz, funk, improvisation, percussion, and contemporary music instruction in a supportive and inspiring environment led by experienced educators and professional musicians.

Jeff Coffin

Grammy-winning saxophonist, educator, and member of Dave Matthews Band.

Jeff will work with students on improvisation, creativity, ensemble performance, and musical communication during the Summer Music Workshops.

Carl Allen

Acclaimed jazz drummer, educator, and former member of the Jazz Messengers and Freddie Hubbard Quintet.

Carl will work with students on jazz ensemble performance, rhythm section interaction, improvisation, and the traditions of swing and modern jazz.

Oskar Cartaya

Internationally recognized bassist, composer, and educator known for jazz, Latin, and world music performance.

Oskar Cartaya will work with students on groove, ensemble performance, Latin rhythms, improvisation, and professional musicianship.

Horace-Alexander Young

Internationally acclaimed trumpeter, educator, and bandleader known for his powerful sound, lyrical improvisation, and leadership in modern jazz.

Terell Stafford will work with students on jazz improvisation, ensemble communication, swing feel, phrasing, trumpet performance, and professional musicianship.
